The current Census exemplifies the government’s outdated view of America’s residents and their relationships. The Census suggests that marriage is the only type of relationship that really matters, it suggests that households all consist of a group of people related to a head of the household, it suggests that male and female are the only two options for gender, etc. If government is going to serve Americans optimally, then it needs to have an updated, accurate understanding of the rich range of personal characteristics and interpersonal relationships that exist in America.
Woodhull is working to restructure the discourse in America about sex and sexuality and about the personal characteristics and interpersonal relationships that stem from that. As part of this work, Woodhull has formed working groups to address these issues around the Census and to present the group’s recommendations to the government.
Sexual Freedom Watch
There are lots of oversight agencies monitoring the integrity of everything from air travel to zoo management, but there is no central office or agency protecting sexual freedom. Woodhull has assumed that role through our Sexual Freedom Watch.
The Woodhull Sexual Freedom Watch monitors proposed administration initiatives, beginning with those at whitehouse.gov, the Obama team's portal to the public. For initiatives affecting sexual freedom, we will work with agency officials, legislators and our allies to further the recognition and the reality of sexual freedom as a fundamental human right.
We and our allies work resolutely to highlight the ways that individuals, issues, identities and communities intersect in the realm of sexual freedom. We will, with your continued support and with a new administration, continue as a national voice affirming and advancing sexual freedom as a fundamental human right.
Restructuring the national dialog around sex and sexuality
A broad range of issues on the progressive public policy agenda have a common origin in the way that society embraces…or fails to embrace…sexual freedom. Problems around sexual identity, gender, social and racial justice, abortion/choice, marriage equality, comprehensive sex education, sex worker rights, pornography/free speech, sexual privacy, and sexual expression all have a common root in the disparity between public and private attitudes about sex and sexuality.
By restructuring the national debate around sex and sexuality, we will be bringing public attitudes and private behaviors closer together, removing, ultimately, the stigma around expressions of gender and sexuality.
