The 2017 Sexual Freedom Summit is rapidly approaching! As you make your plans to attend, (you are coming, aren’t you?) here are a few events and announcements we think you should be aware of.
Movie Night: “Trapped” Featuring a Q&A with 2017 Vicki Sexual Freedom Award Recipient Dr. Willie Parker
Join us Thursday night as we take a look at abortion access through the eyes of clinic workers and lawyers during a viewing of acclaimed documentary “Trapped.” With a looming Supreme Court case regarding abortion access as the backdrop (2016’s Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt), “Trapped” focuses on how TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) laws have impacted reproductive health clinics throughout the country. Stay after the movie for a Q&A session with Dr. Willie Parker, a physician, reproductive justice advocate and educator who has worked with women in underresourced Southern states to provide abortion care.
Introducing the SFS17 Orchestrating Change Track
If you are interested in how those of us working toward sexual freedom can gain knowledge and skills in order to become more effective advocates, you’ll want to take a look at our Orchestrating Change workshops. Focusing on advocacy and action, Woodhull’s Orchestrating Change track features a series of workshops that will take place Friday alongside our general programming. Workshops in this track include:
Don’t miss this wide-ranging conversation on the past, present, and future of sex, the role of the Supreme Court, and the evolution of constitutional law. Join us as renowned legal scholar Geoffrey Stone explores the historical evolutions of religious, social, and legal approaches to sex and the role American constitutional law has played in contemporary debates over all manner of sexual mores.
In this fragile moment in our history, let’s create a new agenda that brings people together as well as encourages us to think differently about political issues. Join author, activist, attorney and original “Nader’s Raider” Jim Turner for a conversation on how “transpartisan” politics work and why this view is not only possible, but necessary, to solve major global problems.
Join writer, internet personality and sex educator Twanna Hines and learn the basics on what it takes to engage in successful, effective civic engagement. Find out about free digital tools that help you engage communities and connect with your elected officials, and get concrete tips on the strategies, tactics, skills and current policy implications that you’ll need to know to up your game beyond “call your representatives.”
