Healthy Hurting: Masochism, BDSM, and Self-Injurious Behavior

August 17 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Many people find release in pain and can effectively use it as a coping mechanism to manage anxiety, stress, chronic pain, and other challenges. Kinksters with a history of self-injurious behavior can often describe a large difference between self-injury and their masochism, particularly when it comes to how each activity impacts their mental health and self-image. This class focuses on discussing the differences between healthy masochism/pain play and detrimental self-injurious behavior, including the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of each. We will explore how they may be inexorably linked for some people, and how others separate and navigate them. We will also discuss interacting and providing positive support (whether it be intimate relationships, kinky play, or in a mental health setting) with people who need pain in their lives.
