Hey sexual pleasure- can we be friends? Love, abortion access.

August 17 @ 10:45 am - 12:15 pm

I am the Executive Director at Women’s Medical Fund – an organization that since 1985 has provided emergency financial assistance to pregnant people needing support to pay for their abortion. I have worked in reproductive and sexual health for years, though am newer to the abortion fund movement. In my time in all these roles, I have noticed that we fail to connect abortion access to sexual pleasure. Why? All people get pregnant from sex. Some through force and violence, but many through consensual sex. But we aren’t talking about the sex part of abortion access. Nor are we talking about abortion much in the sexality field. This workshop aims to inform participants about abortion access in the U.S. to demonstrate how its impacted by systemic oppressions like racism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalism. We will dialogue about how these systemic oppressions connect to a person feeling agency to experience and express sexual pleasure and freedom. We will discuss how people in the sexuality and reproductive health fields perpetuate “sexual pleasure inequities,” in part through our avoidance of talking about sex. We will talk about the specific impacts on people of color and other communities whose bodies have been historically policed, harmed, and invisibilized. So that the conversation continues beyond the people who have the privilege to attend this summit, we will co-create a hashtag. We will also each make a personal commitment to consider our power and privilege as sexuality educators/counselors/healers to embody a pleasure framework for all communities, including people who have had abortions.
