Laura A. Jacobs LCSW-R (she/they/none), is a trans and genderqueer psychotherapist, speaker, author, and activist specializing in transgender, nonbinary, LGBTQIA+, BDSM/kink, polyamory/consensual nonmonogamy, sex work, and sexual/gender diversity broadly.
Laura’s book Surviving Transphobia (www.SurvivingTransphobia.com) recently won the American Psychological Association’s 2025 Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity’s Distinguished Book Award! Laura was also presented the 2019 Standard of Excellence Award by the American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, and has been recognized by other organizations as well. In addition, Laura served as the Chair of the Board of Directors for The Callen-Lorde Community Health Center in NYC, one of the largest LGBTQIA+ care providers globally and was the first trans person to chair an LGBTQIA+ Federally Qualified Health Center nationwide.
Laura is a prolific speaker in the media, having made several hundred public appearances and presentations at medical and mental health conferences, schools, and other organizations, and has been featured by NPR, MSNBC, NBCNewsOnline, SiriusXM, CBSNews, Mic.com, TEDx, The New York Times (before their coverage turned toward bigotry), and more. They are a member of the Kink Clinical Guidelines Workgroup, a coalition which developed the first best practices document for the mental health care of those interested and/or involved in kink, BDSM, and/or fetish eroticism.
Laura is also a lifelong kinkster and currently identifies as an unowned lesbian submissive/slave who can occasionally switch.
