64 Day Campaign for Human Rights – Week One

Every December 10th, otherwise known as Human Rights Day, we reaffirm and celebrate economic, social, cultural, political and civil rights. In the 64 days leading up to the 64th anniversary of the UDHR on December 10, 2012, we will highlight 64 member and partner organizations. Please forward widely and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for daily highlights.We kick off this campaign in our first week, a few days after Indigenous Peoples Day, by highlighting four organizations defending the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Nations: International Indian Treaty Council, Mvskoke Food Sovereignty Initiative, Tonatierra, and Hawai’i Institute for Human Rights. We are also highlighting three additional organizations working to promote human rights from a local, state and national perspective.

The human rights framework provides us with a template with which to re-envision development for a metropolitan city in the south, like Atlanta, Georgia.

THE INTERNATIONAL INDIAN TREATY COUNCIL
IITC was founded in 1974 at a gathering by the American Indian Movement in Standing Rock, South Dakota, attended by more than 5000 representatives of 98 Indigenous Nations. IITC is an organization of Indigenous Peoples from North, Central, South America, the Caribbean and the Pacific working for the Sovereignty and Self Determination of Indigenous Peoples and the recognition and protection of Indigenous Rights, Treaties, Traditional Cultures and Sacred Lands. TONATIERRA
Tonatierra’s mission is to create and sustain a Cultural Embassy of the Indigenous Peoples that will support local-global and holistic indigenous community development initiatives in education, culture, and econmic development in accord with the principals of Community Ecology and Self Determination. AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to protecting human rights and civil liberties in the United States. The ACLU is the largest civil liberties organization in the country, with offices in 50 states and over 500,000 members. The ACLU was founded in 1920, largely in response to the curtailment of liberties that accompanied America’s entry into World War I, including the persecution of political dissidents and the denial of due process rights for non-citizens. In the intervening decades, the ACLU has advocated to hold the U.S. government accountable to the rights protected under U.S. Constitution and other civil and human rights laws. Read more
MVSKOKE FOOD SOVEREIGNTY INITIATIVE
Mvskoke Food Sovereignty Initiative works to enable the Mvskoke people and their neighbors to provide for their food and health needs now and in the future through sustainable agriculture, economic development, community involvement, cultural and educational programs. Read more
HAWAI’I INSTITUTE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
The Hawai’i Institute for Human Rights (HIHR) is dedicated to promoting human rights principles and a culture of peace through education and advocacy. HIHR advocates the use of public law instruments in implementing civil, political, economic, social, cultural, collective and ecological rights. HIHR strives for social justice in the development of a sustainable society in Hawai’i. Read more
FOUR FREEDOMS FORUM
Four Freedoms Forum (FFF) is an innovative and inspirational institution promoting independent public policy research and providing advanced analysis with a moral methodological approach to guarantee human rights and fundamental freedoms. Through reasoned discourse and respectful dialogue, Four Freedoms Forum ensures exchange of information to reach deeper understanding of our recognized human rights and engages all stakeholders in the United States of America to protect fundamental freedoms. THE ATLANTA PUBLIC SECTOR ALLIANCE
The mission of the Atlanta Public Sector Alliance (APSA) is to engage in long-term, multi-issue, grassroots organizing in the Atlanta region. APSA prioritizes work at the base in order to build a people-centered, human rights movement that addresses the root causes of systemic injustice and oppression. APSA focuses strategically on the public sector as an arena of struggle. Read more
